WRUR History

WRUR began in the fall of 1947, occupying 2 rooms in the basement of Burton residence hall and broadcasting on a campus-wide frequency of 650 AM. In 1950, we began broadcasting from the Eastman and what was then the Prince Street Women's campuses. Five years later, temporary studios were constructed in Todd Union's basement, where WRUR still lives today. The first official FM meeting occurred on August 20, 1965, where it was determined that the purpose of the FM station would be to "establish, own, operate and maintain a non-profit and noncommercial educational FM broadcasting station." The Federal Communications Committee (FCC) soon sent us confirmation of our call letters, WRUR-FM, which would broadcast on a frequency of 90.1 using a 10 watt transmitter. In February of 1969, WRUR purchased a $30,000 transmitter which was built in Towers on the River Campus, and allowed an increase in power to 5,000 watts. Due to interference with Canadian broadcasting, the power was soon reduced until September when WRUR changed frequency to 88.5FM. In February of 1970, we increased power to 20,000 watts, but forced to drop because of interference with chemistry experiments conducted in Lattimore Hall. This lasted until 1975 when the chemistry department relocated and, after testing, a higher transmitting power was approved by the FCC. In 1983, a generous gift of $12,000 was received from the class of 1957 to help WRUR's efforts in purchasing a new antenna to be built off campus. Due to interference with local 911 emergency call boxes, WRUR had to decrease broadcasting power to just 50 watts, until 1995 when a new antenna, atop the Hyatt Regency Rochester hotel, allowed an increase to the current power of 3,000 watts.
