Brooklyn orchestral indie rock outfit San Fermin released the sleeper hit record of 2014 with its self-titled debut.
The project of songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone, it dabbles in storytelling, multiple singers, beautiful orchestrations and styles that range from jazzy and cinematic to pop and rock. San Fermin is almost like a mini-opera, with the beautiful and infectious single "Sonsick" being the show-stopper. Influenced by records like Abbey Road, Graceland and Sufjan Stevens' Come On Feel The Illinoise, the 24-year-old Ludwig-Leone wrote the album after receiving classical training at Yale. He collaborated with a cast of musicians on the record - including singer Allen Tate, as well as Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of last week's concert artist Lucius. At some points the album recalls Dirty Projectors, at others its very reminiscent of The National, at others still it is a collection of music unto itself.
