The Kinks put out so much music on Pye Records between 1964 and 1971 that a new anthology of the period takes five discs just to scratch the surface. So it makes sense that World Cafe's conversation with singer Ray Davies would need to be spread out over two days.

On this episode, the show kicks off with The Kinks' first hit, "You Really Got Me." The band was just a year old at the time, but it was already crafting a perfect mix of Ray Davies' writing and his brother Dave Davies' immaculate riffs. Here, the singer discusses how frustration made The Kinks' members take control to get the sound they wanted.
