Donavon Frankenreiter: Ocean Songs

Donavon Frankenreiter.
Donavon Frankenreiter.

A love of the ocean has given Donavon Frankenreiter ample inspiration for his laid-back acoustic music. Drawn to simple pleasures — surfing, music, family — Frankenreiter has maintained careers as both a surfer and a musician, using the latter to dispense a positive, feel-good message.

Frankenreiter started surfing early and gained a sponsor at 13. Professional surfing took him to Hawaii, where he rented a place from Jack Johnson's parents. Johnson and Frankenreiter became instant friends, and spent much of their time surfing and making music. Once Frankenreiter found the confidence to release his own music as a solo artist, he collaborated with Johnson — who had since become an enormously successful musician in his own right, as well as a label owner — for his self-titled debut. Frankenreiter's second studio album, Move By Yourself, features more of his breezy acoustic sounds, but also incorporates more a funk-dance feel.
